Spent Fuel Handling Machine

Challenge:

Modify an existing Spent Fuel Handling Machine (SFHM) by raising its hoists approximately four feet to provide the lift range necessary to load the Dry Storage Canister/Transfer Cask with spent fuel assemblies. The existing system was modified once before by adding one more hoist at the opposite side of original hoist that puts the existing SFHM to its load capacity limit. Raising the hoist by 4-feet overloaded the existing SFHM support columns and the crane wheel holddown restraints which keep the SFHM from overturning.

Resolution:

Our engineering team developed a new steel support frame to replace the existing support members at the top and raises the hoist to the desired height. The new support frame is a shop welded and field bolted support system which allows minimum field work and interruption. The columns are locally reinforced with steel plates at the overstressed location. The overstressed holddown restraint is replaced with a stronger restraint system.
