Challenge:
Remediate the heavily damaged walers (sheet pile support beams) in order to prevent failure of the sheet pile system.
Resolution:
Our visual inspection of the sheet pile support system found localized severe damage at various areas along the walers. At a corner location, substantial warping of the waler front flanges and heavy through-wall corrosion of the waler web was observed.
In order to restore strength lost by the damaged walers, our engineering team designed a belt system consisting of two wide flange beams welded to the structurally sound sheet piling. The belt system transferred the loads from the damaged corner region to the undamaged central region.
