Challenge:
A reinforced concrete structure required evaluation for the effects of an aircraft impact. The large expected deformations and highly non-linear behavior of concrete necessitated the development of a detailed finite element model of the structure in which concrete cracking and rebar yielding are included.
Resolution:
A model was developed and benchmarked in which the concrete tensile and compressive behaviors as well as the rebar material non-linearities were verified. The benchmarked reinforced concrete material model was used in the evaluation of the actual structure. The susceptibility of the structure to aircraft impact damage was determined and reported to the client.
