Spotlight Project of the Month

Challenge: 

Hopper Engineering Associates was requested to analyze five identical hanging 10 feet by 10 feet structural frames made of aluminum. One side is equipped with a display screen while the other has a cantilevered platform for the performer to stand on. The frame is designed to be rotatable and doubles as a lighting platform.

The client intends to ascend and descend the platforms from the ceiling.  They will be using four guy wires for an impressive entry.  And due to the unique shape and the dynamic platform.  Multiple loading conditions shall be assessed to ensure the structural capacity and stability. This will ensure the safety of the performers.

Resolution:

A commercially available structural analysis program was used to model the structural system of the frames. Static and dynamic loads were applied to the model and the member stresses were extracted to ensure structural adequacy. The system was found to be adequate for the applicable loadings.

Hopper Engineering Associates was founded by Managing Principal David Hopper in 1979. With roots in power generation and manufacturing the company has expanded its services and clientele to include petrochemical, entertainment, construction, legal, shipbuilding, rigging, and homeland security. As a result of our growth and success, three additional Principals are now employed by the firm.
