Offshore Platform Crane Pedestal Replacement

Challenge:

The crane height on an offshore platform needed to be raised to avoid buildings on the platform from interfering with the crane boom’s range of motion. The existing crane support structure must be verified and upgraded for increased loads from the new, taller pedestal. Additionally, a staircase that spirals up the pedestal to access the new cab height must be designed.

Resolution:

A computer model was developed of the pedestal and crane support structure. Worst case kingpost reaction forces were applied to the system to determine adequacy of the structure. Working closely with the client, a series of upgrades to the platform were determined and developed into a set of construction drawings. Working within the limited area constraints of the offshoreplatform, a spiral staircase was designed to code specifications to allow easy access to the higher elevation of the crane cab.
