Challenge:
Our client required a fragility assessment of an existing Selenium Removal System which consists of seven tanks each mounted on its own independent support structure. The purpose of the analysis was to investigate whether the seven tanks and their structural components are able to prevent the release of their contained regulated substances during a seismic event.
Resolution:
A series of hand calculations were used with the assistance of a computer model to evaluate the structural members and tanks that resist the applied seismic load per the applicable code. The evaluation was based on the CalARP Seismic Guidance Document to assure that existing tanks will not collapse, rupture, or fail. All components were evaluated and a majority of the items were deemed acceptable. Recommendations were made to remediate the few non-compliant components.
