Challenge:
Hopper Engineering and Associates was tasked with the evaluation of a three level stage (shown above in a live action shot) with a diagonal staircase and elevator, for the purposes of filming. The staircase and floor levels were constructed from miscellaneous steel members. The structure was to be engineered for large production loads from high occupancy as well as cameras and techno cranes. Furthermore, large dynamic vibrations during running sequences and movements from the support crew were to be mitigated.
Resolution:
Finite element models were created using a commercially available structural analysis program. Dead and live loads were input to simulate the large production loading. The structure was then optimized and modified in order to support the loads. Further, deflections were checked and further modifications were made to reduce the amount of vibration felt by the production.
