Challenge:
To design a new bridge to crossover a pipeway capable of supporting a large drilling rig. The bridge is within the facility of an oil refinery site; and only a single lane roadway is required. Design of the bridge shall meet requirements of AASHTO and CalTrans current specifications.
Resolution:
Our engineering team designed a new single lane precast concrete deck bridge supported by three abutments. Two simply supported spans are design to cross the pipeway. Selection of the locations of the abutments is to avoid interference with the existing pipeline. An expansion joint is located between the decks to eliminate the stresses due to temperature, creep, and shrinkage. Steel-reinforced elastromeric bearings are used to support the precast concrete decks. Anchorages between the deck and abutments are designed to resist all design loads. Traffic railings are also installed on both sides of the bridge for safety.
