Challenge:
To analyze the structural integrity of a nuclear fuel transfer cask lid and lid bolts during a hypothetical accidental drop. Special analysis considerations include ensuring the lid remains sealed during and after the event as well as verifying the inelastic deformation limits on the lid and lid bolts.
Resolution:
Our engineering team created a finite element model comprised of a detailed fuel transfer cask, impact limiters, and a dummy representing the cask contents in order to perform an explicit dynamic analysis. The results obtained verified that the design met requisite industry guidelines.
