Challenge:
To evaluate the structural adequacy of a nuclear fuel transfer cask pedestal during lifting and seismic event loading.
Resolution:
Our engineering team created a detailed finite element model of the transfer cask pedestal which consists of a hexagonal steel structure filled with grout. An in-depth stress analysis that considered various loading conditions including lifting and seismic loads was completed. Design modifications recommended to improve the structural strength of the assembly were implemented and made by our client.
