Challenge:
Our firm was tasked to design a 360 degree swivel adapter for use with an existing spreader beam that our firm designed many years ago. The required suspended load was significant: 180 tons. The adapter also had to be capable of swiveling 360 degrees and swinging up to 30 degrees to allow for unsymmetric loading.
Resolution:
Using both hand calculations prescribed by ASME BTH-1 and finite element analysis software, our engineering team designed a sling adapter that satisfied the strength requirements for the maximum load desired by the client, and was capable of both swiveling and swinging.
